Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust (WHCT) wanted to upgrade their website to ensure that it was easier to navigate, was friendly for mobile phones and tablets and easier to update.
Thank you so much for your very strong partnership and delivery. I am delighted with the new website.
Nigel Jackson – Hon. Sec. Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust
Already on WordPress as a platform, a copy of the site was made and development continued in parallel, keeping as much of the traditional ‘feel’ as possible yet still bringing a modern touch.
A key part of the design was making it clearer the wide number and variety of churches under WHCT’s umbrella, grouped intro trails. These were highlighted on a new churches drop-down which showcases those trails.
A custom Google Map was also introduced to help give a sense of how the churches are linked, which will shortly also include lines connecting the churches on the trails.
Improved Search Engine Performance
Previously much of the content was on one page, eg. an entire church trail would be one page. While this was useful for an overview (and continues), it does limit the ability to expand the content, eg. adding more photos of churches, details of keyholders, etc.
Other parts of the site were also broken up and use menus to make it simpler to navigate as a user, and especially reducing the length of some pages on mobile devices. More specific, targetted content on each post/page allows visitors to more quickly reach the content they’re seeking.
We know this isn’t necessarily exciting, but it’s an essential component of a website really becoming a tool rather than just a brochure. Regular updates of a website can be hard if you’re not sure which section to update, why, or how to make a page friendly for visitors.
Training was provided to 4 core members of the trust reflecting it’s main areas of operations (grants, friends, ride & stride) ensuring that all had an understanding of how content could be updated, as well as how to maximise it’s impact through email and social media.
